Exact age is a calendar calculation, not simply total days divided by 365. Month lengths differ, leap years add an extra day, and February 29 introduces edge cases that simple arithmetic can mishandle.

Age Calculator compares a date of birth with the chosen reference date and expresses the elapsed calendar time in the supported units. It is useful for general planning and date checks, but legal, school, insurance, or program eligibility may use its own rules for cutoff dates and leap-day birthdays.

How does the Age Calculator work?

How to use Age Calculator

  1. Enter the date of birth.
  2. Enter the comparison date if the calculator allows a date other than today.
  3. Calculate the calendar age.
  4. Review years, months, days, or other breakdowns according to the result the tool provides.
  5. Use official eligibility rules when an age calculation affects a legal, school, insurance, or program requirement.

Why calendar age is not total days divided by 365

Calendar years and months have unequal lengths, and leap years add February 29. Exact age therefore counts completed calendar years first, then the remaining months and days. This avoids the drift created by using an average year length for a date-specific question.

Eligibility rules can use different conventions

A mathematically correct age does not automatically determine legal or program eligibility. Schools, insurers, competitions and government programs can define cutoff dates and leap-day birthdays differently, so check the governing rule when the result affects eligibility.

Examples

Birthday passed this year

The person is 36 years, 4 months, and 5 days old using calendar-aware calculation.

Birthday not yet reached

The person is still 35 because the 2026 birthday has not occurred.

Leap-day birthday

Legal and social treatment of a leap-day birthday can vary by jurisdiction even though calendar elapsed time can be calculated.

Age in total days

Total elapsed days is a different representation from years/months/days because calendar months have unequal lengths.

Common use cases

Frequently asked questions

How is exact age calculated?

Calendar age counts completed years first, then the remaining calendar months and days. That is more accurate than dividing total days by 365 because month lengths and leap years vary.

Can I calculate age on a past or future date?

Yes when the calculator allows a reference date. This can show how old someone was or will be on a specific date.

How are leap-day birthdays handled?

A calendar-aware calculation must account for February 29 and the rules used for anniversaries in non-leap years. Legal treatment can vary by jurisdiction.

Why can two age calculators differ by a day?

Differences can come from date boundaries, time zones, inclusive counting, or leap-day handling. Date-only calculations should clearly state their convention.

Can I use the result for legal eligibility?

Use the calculator as a date aid, but verify the governing legal or program rule because eligibility can define age boundaries differently.
