Adding GST to a net price and extracting GST from a tax-inclusive price are different calculations. GST Calculator handles both directions using the tax rate you enter, showing the tax component and corresponding net or gross amount.
The arithmetic is universal; the legally correct GST rate is not. Rates, exemptions, zero-rating, place-of-supply rules, and invoicing requirements depend on jurisdiction, transaction type, and date. Use the tool for percentage calculation, then verify current tax treatment from the relevant authority before filing or issuing compliance-sensitive documents.
How to use this tool
How does the GST Calculator work?
How to use GST Calculator
- Enter the amount.
- Enter or confirm the GST rate that applies to the transaction.
- Choose inclusive or exclusive calculation mode when that option is provided.
- Calculate the tax amount and final total.
- Verify the current rate and tax treatment for the relevant jurisdiction before using the result for filing, invoicing, or compliance.
Adding GST versus extracting GST
To add GST, apply the tax rate to the net amount and add the tax to obtain the gross total. To extract GST from a tax-inclusive amount, divide by 1 + rate/100 to recover the net base, then subtract the net amount from the gross total. Simply subtracting the GST percentage from the gross amount does not reverse the original calculation.
Tax rate and tax law are separate from the arithmetic
The calculator can apply the rate you enter, but it cannot determine whether a transaction is taxable, exempt, zero-rated, or subject to a particular jurisdiction. Use current tax-authority guidance for compliance-sensitive work.
Examples
Add 10% GST
GST = 10; gross price = 110.
Extract 10% GST
Net = 110 ÷ 1.10 = 100; GST component = 10.
Why not take 10% of gross?
10% of 110 is 11, which is not the embedded GST; extraction must divide by 1.10.
Different rate
GST = 37.50 and gross = 287.50.
Common use cases
- Invoice checks
- Retail pricing
- Business quotes
- Tax-inclusive pricing
- Tax-exclusive pricing
Frequently asked questions
How do I add GST to a net amount?
Multiply the net amount by the GST rate to find the tax, then add that tax to the net amount. Equivalently, multiply by 1 + rate/100.
How do I extract GST from a tax-inclusive total?
Divide the gross amount by 1 + rate/100 to recover the net amount, then subtract the net amount from the gross total to find the GST component.
Why can't I remove 18% GST by simply subtracting 18% from the gross price?
Because the 18% was calculated from the smaller net base, not from the tax-inclusive total. Extracting tax requires dividing by 1.18 rather than multiplying the gross amount by 0.82.
Does the calculator know the correct GST rate for my transaction?
Use the rate that legally applies to the relevant jurisdiction, product, service, and date. Rates, exemptions, and zero-rating rules are outside a generic percentage calculation.
Can I use the result for tax filing?
Treat it as arithmetic assistance. Official invoicing, filing, exemptions, place-of-supply rules, and rounding should follow current jurisdiction-specific tax guidance.
